Objective assessment: several tractor units and semi-trailers

Consultation:

A haulier has several tractor units and several semi-trailers that are used interchangeably. How should load capacity be calculated for the objective assessment method?

Short response:

Historical consultation based on the DGT consultations cited below (2002 and 2007).

Only self-propelled vehicles are considered vehicles. Accordingly, the load capacity of each articulated vehicle (tractor unit and semi-trailer) is the difference between the combination’s maximum authorised total mass and the tare weights of the vehicles carrying the load (that is, the semi-trailer and the tractor unit). If tractor units use different semi-trailers, the tare weight of each semi-trailer is capped at 8 tonnes.

Therefore, for each tractor unit, the vehicle’s load capacity is calculated as the combination’s maximum authorised total mass, less the tractor unit’s tare weight and less the tare weight of the heaviest semi-trailer used with that tractor unit, subject to a maximum of 8 tonnes for the semi-trailer.
