Objective assessment: a truck with several trailers

Consultation:

Objective assessment of freight transport carried out by a truck using more than one trailer alternately: should the total load capacity be counted, or only that of one trailer, since they cannot be used at the same time?

Short response:

Historical consultation based on binding DGT ruling V0695-08 dated 8 April 2008 and the Ministerial Orders cited below.

The load capacity of road trains is the difference between the maximum authorised total weight and the sum of the tare weights of the vehicles carrying the load (the empty weight of the truck and trailer). Where one truck is used with different trailers, we understand that the special rule for tractor units used with different semi-trailers does not apply. The actual load capacity must therefore be determined by taking into account the tare weights of the different trailers in proportion to the number of days each is actually used.
