Limitation periods are interrupted under Article 68 of Spain’s General Tax Law. The applicable grounds depend on which right under Article 66 is running; a notice or an appeal does not automatically interrupt every limitation period.
1. The Tax Administration’s right to assess a tax debt (Article 66(a)): interruption occurs through an action by the Administration, formally brought to the taxpayer’s knowledge, directed to recognition, regularisation, examination, inspection, safeguarding or assessment of the tax obligation; the filing of a claim or appeal and formally known steps taken in its course; referral of proceedings to the criminal courts or a complaint to the Public Prosecutor; receipt of a court communication ordering the administrative procedure to be stayed; and any reliable taxpayer action directed to filing or self-assessing the debt (Article 68(1)).
2. The right to collect an assessed or self-assessed debt (Article 66(b)): interruption occurs through an Administration action formally brought to the taxpayer’s knowledge and effectively directed to collection; a claim or appeal and formally known steps during its course; insolvency proceedings; civil or criminal proceedings directed to collecting the debt or receipt of a court communication ordering a stay; and reliable taxpayer action directed to payment or extinction of the debt (Article 68(2)).
3. The right to request tax refunds, refunds of undue payments, reimbursement of guarantee costs or correction of a self-assessment (Article 66(c)): interruption occurs through any reliable taxpayer action seeking those outcomes and the filing, processing or resolution of a claim or appeal (Article 68(3)).
4. The right to receive a refund or reimbursement (Article 66(d)): interruption occurs through an Administration action directed to making the payment, reliable taxpayer action demanding payment, and the filing, processing or resolution of a claim or appeal (Article 68(4)).
As a general rule, interruption starts a new four-year period (Article 68(6), read with Article 66). Special rules apply when administrative court proceedings, civil or criminal proceedings, a court-ordered stay or insolvency are involved. In those cases, the new period may start upon notification of the final decision, the lifting of the stay or conclusion of insolvency proceedings, among the rules in Article 68(7).
Once limitation has been acquired, it is applied by the authorities of their own motion and extinguishes the tax debt. As a general rule, it benefits all persons liable for payment, subject to the exceptions in Article 68(8) (Article 69(1)–(3)).
To determine whether a specific act interrupted limitation, identify the right that was running and verify that the act meets the applicable statutory conditions. The mere existence of a communication or appeal does not establish that every limitation period was interrupted.

I had a really urgent problem in the middle of the summer that I needed to get fixed. I tried contacting a bunch of agencies but they were either unavailable, slow, had terrible service or were crazy expensive (one company quoted me 1000€!). Josep replied to me within 10 minutes and managed to submit my forms on the deadline and all for a great price. He saved my life - 100% recommend!
